Hale wants nothing more than to remain in his workshop, filling endless hours with his crystal-tech experiments. If he could just solve the gas poisoning, he could cure his grandparents, heal the city, and create a future with his best friend Rin.
But Rin wants to join the underground rebels, the Astrene. She is tired of stealing from broken towers, fighting with guards, and pretending like this city has any future. When the king abducts Rin’s family, she flees with Hale and he confesses he’s known where to find the rebels all along.
Stinging with betrayal, Rin embraces the ruthless Astrene—where two rival leaders are each bent upon seizing the throne for themselves. One leader claims Rin, molding her into a deadly killer with promises to rescue her family. Desperate to save her, Hale accepts recruitment from the other leader, who forces him to perform deadly human experimentation.
As Hale and Rin’s friendship cracks apart, a disguised princess walks a tightrope between them, manipulating the Astrene to fulfill secret plans of her own. Pitted against each other and struggling to survive, all three must decide how much of themselves, their relationships, and the lives of innocents they’re willing to destroy to save their city.

Kahla’s whole life is protecting her little brother Tevin from their father, until the sky cracks open and she’s struck by prismatic lighting. After Kahla experiences a brief glimpse into a dying world, the scar in the sky remains, pulsing in and out of a half dozen colors. Mostly life returns to normal.

Days later auras sprout like flames from a few of Kahla’s friends and a handful of strangers, yet Kahla’s the only one to see them. Then everyone without an aura slowly fades away, the edges of their body becoming translucent, eating toward the middle.
Tevin is amongst the fades.

Kahla’s cult-leading father uses this to gain power and incites the city to riot amidst the apocalypse.

Kahla struggles to save Tevin, diving into dark underbelly of the city, seeking to discover the true meaning of the scarlight and the strange powers brewing within her. Her group of bar-patron friends and a legendary killer are her only allies in a fading world.
